New candy shop in Lockeford makes for sweet sensations

By News-Sentinel staff

A new shop offering old-fashioned treats is causing a sweet sensation in Lockeford.

Granny D’s Sweets and Things opened two weeks ago and has been serving up sugar ever since.

The owners, Deneille and Keith Dils, travel far and wide to find nostalgic candies that many believe have long ago disappeared.

The Dils have been wanting to open a candy store for years but never quite found the right spot until they came to Lockeford.

“We liked the small-town feel,” said Deneille Dils, who gives her nick name to the shop.

The most popular candies are the those that can’t be readily found in other stores, like fresh taffy and wax bottles, she said.

One of the more unusual sweets she carries is called a cow paddy, which is made by hand using special green chocolate.

In addition to good, old-fashioned candy, the shop offers specialty chocolates, frozen yogurt and smoothies. For patrons who value their teeth, Granny D’s offers several sugar-free candies and yogurts as well.

The candy store will celebrate its official grand opening from June 10 to 15. Visitors are encouraged to register for one of several prizes, donated by local businesses, that will be given away in raffles.

Granny D’s Sweets and Things is located at 13296 Highway 88, across the street from Union State Bank. The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday
